In this short interview with Dr Minty Mitra of Chulalongkorn University, I explain briefly why the saying “No pain, no gain” is not the best way to approach language learning. Instead, I suggest an alternative and more useful saying “No fun, no gain”.
Reading easy and enjoyable stories in English is one of the best ways to translate the saying in language learning. When students have a lot of fun reading books (or listening to interesting videos), they gradually develop a feel of the language and help them use the language in meaningful situations.
