I am working on a research plan to know more about translanguaging in my context, pre-service English teachers education in a multilingual community and am curious for possible research cooperation with you Prof. Willy Renandya.
Hi, I am also somewhat skeptical of the universal benefit of translanguaging in the classroom, as I believe it is highly context dependent. An ESL classroom with a classroom of learners with the same L1 does not seem like the ideal context for ‘translanguaging.’ After working at a school for the last two years and asking my students about their heritage languages, I also found many students had no desire to incorporate their L1 in the classroom, and their attitudes towards such an approach were negative. I have so far not found any research in the area of student attitudes towards this approach, but will start on my master’s thesis early next year and am considering doing a study on student attitudes towards translanguaging, and perhaps narrowing the context for which this approach is even appropriate or helpful at all. If you know of any current research in the field in this area, I’d be most appreciative of some tips!
